Upgrading from a Lurker

Thu Jun 14, 2007, 9:07 PM
Well I've lurked on deviant for at least a few years now, off and on mostly. Oddly enough I've never felt the desire to post anything of my own until now. Maybe its because I see all the other great artist here and felt intimidated. Maybe it's because I'd like to start a career based on my art, but despite popular belief talented artist are not in low supply, and only so many actually manage to do anything with it. Or maybe it's because I've been playing with the idea of going back to collage. My GI Bill is only good for 10 years after all. I started at the Art Institute of Seattle, but wasn't able to find a job to cover my tuition and had to drop out before finishing a single class. So with a wife and a kid on the way, and nobody hiring, I went to the only people that were always hiring, the military. I joined the Air Force as a Network Tech, thinking it would be bearable since I do love working with computers. But it was just bearable, above and beyond all the military crap that went on the customers made it worse. I'm sure we've all heard various horror stories from about customer service calls, like using the CD-ROM as a cup holder, or wondering why the computer won't turn on during a power outage. But these kind of calls happen more often than you would suspect (my personal favorite that I had to deal with was a "non-functional" monitor that was simply turned off). And don't get me started on the guys you think just because they have more rank than me they know how to do my job better than I do. But despite the customers, military life style, and hazing in the early years, by that last year I'd gotten in a decent grove. So I was planning on re-enlisting at the end of my four years, but as an unfortunate side-effect from 9-11, the military was over manned so I ended up getting the boot instead.

While I was originally from Washington State (as in NOT Washington D.C.), My family had since moved to Colorado. So thats were we went as well. I'm currently working in a local struggling comic shop/record store (if your looking for comics, trading cards, or anime/manga merchandise check us out on eBay as BlueCoyoteCollectibles & JRRComix). As you can see I'm not above a shameless plug ^^. The work is pretty tedious and the pay is rather low, but I love the people I work with, which is something that I've never had before. So I'm probably much more loyal to the shop than I should be and really don't want to get another job.

So anyways now you probably know more about me that you really cared to. As I was saying I've been wanting to go back to collage, but the nearest colleges are in Denver which is a good hour away. So with work, commuting, and school I don't think I would have much life outside of that. I'm considering online classes but then, all thats available here is a slow unreliable dial up connection. There DSL not 2 miles away, but the phone company has no immediate plans to expand any further, not enough demand or some such. But then I wouldn't hurt my to brush up on my skills anyways. I tend to work in short creative burst with long down times in between. Its probably been over a year between my last piece and my most recent. So I'm hoping that posting on Deviant will inspire me to work on a more regular bases.
